A number of universities in Michigan are suspending face-to-face classes now that there are known cases of COVID in the state. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed the state’s first two presumptive positives, in Oakland and Wayne counties, late Tuesday. Classes will resume “remotely in alternative formats” Monday, March 16 through April 21, the last day of the semester. According to the announcement, “The two days of cancellations give faculty time to transition to alternative formats.
In his press release, President Mark Schlissel did not urge students to leave campus, but did say for those “who choose to remain on campus,” Michigan Dining and U-M Housing will remain operational. All events with more than individuals are cancelled until at least April

Michigan State President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley announced in a letter to students today. As president of Michigan State University, it is my ultimate responsibility to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. That has been my guiding principle since I arrived at this great university last year, and even more so since the coronavirus pandemic turned our lives upside down. Our decision in March to transition to remote classes and have more employees work remotely was the right one.
Our entire process stems from values-based decisions and constant evaluation and re-evaluation, as the nature of the pandemic changes. But given the current status of the virus in our country — particularly what we are seeing at other institutions as they re-populate their campus communities — it has become evident to me that, despite our best efforts and strong planning, it is unlikely we can prevent widespread transmission of COVID between students if our undergraduates return to campus.
So, effective immediately, we are asking undergraduate students who planned to live in our residence halls this fall to stay home and continue their education with MSU remotely. While a vast majority of our classes already were offered in remote formats, we will work the next two weeks to transition those that were in-person or hybrid to remote formats. As Stanley — who has a background in studying infectious diseases — mentions above, the majority of classes were already set to be conducted remotely, but there were still plans to have in-person and hybrid both online and in-person instruction courses this fall.

Dating apps and hookup culture: MSU professors weigh in. Celebrating February as the month of love, we also recognize the power of one’s sexuality and how.
Yet, there are certain stereotypes surrounding dating apps and hookup culture that seem confusing to many. Professors at Michigan State University give their opinions on hookup culture and whether dating apps have truly killed romance, or altered it. Timm said hookup culture has become more prevalent and that people sometimes confuse romance with hookups. When they are looking for a real connection, they go about it through hookups. People not being clear with themselves or their partners about what they might potentially want results in significantly hurt feelings.
Intimacy involves vulnerability and vulnerability needs to happen face to face. Assistant professor in the Integrative Studies in Social Science department Brandy Ellison said she has never used any online dating platform. As a society we tend to overstate the impact that things have had, we tend to see it as very different from the way it used to be. Chopik has done research on dating apps including Tinder.
And then when you ask people why they use things like Tinder or Bumble, most of the time it’s to find long-term relationship partners.
Once upon a time, the majority of people met their life partner in somewhat conventional ways. Maybe at church, school or on the job. A few more avant-garde types might have taken out an ad in the personals seeking Mr. Well, times have definitely changed. According to Daniel Moen, an assistant professor in the department of family and consumer science at Minnesota State Mankato, many people of all ages are meeting each other online.
His students do a lot of role-playing where they try to solve relationship problems.
